Battery Review: Battery life for notebooks could get much better this year

PC laptop manufacturers have wrestled with the issue surrounding battery life for years, not least of which because business users keep talking about how productivity can be hampered when the juice runs out. But some new models coming out this year may finally make “all-day” battery life a reality.
Lenovo was the first to unveil one of these with the ThinkPad T420, an ultra-thin notebook weighing under four pounds. The company announced that it could stay on for up to 30 hours on one charge, provided the user had the extended battery, which is larger than the standard one. The standard one is a 9-cell battery that can go for up to 15 hours, while the extended one adds another nine cells to double the power.
Meanwhile, HP unveiled its EliteBook 8460p, which can go as high as 32 hours when you get the optional high-capacity battery dv6000 dv5 . And it can stay on that long, despite a next-generation Intel Core processor and 14-inch HD display.
All that said, battery life numbers have always been inflated because they aren’t based on real usability tests, other than just turning the machine on and letting it function without so much as an app open. Hence, why it’s a bit more believable that Apple’s new MacBook Pro lineup announced last week won’t top seven hours of battery life, even at the best of times.
Still, Lenovo and HP have created business notebooks that should easily survive a full work day, and then some. Assuming the EliteBook goes a full 32 hours, that’s like flying to China and back with a little time to spare to check email.
At this point, neither manufacturer has said much of anything about when these battery  vgp-bps13 Gateway m505 battery life levels will be seen with consumer notebooks, but a 15-hour charge should be coming, if  not this year, then almost certainly     by sometime in 2012. Sub-$1,000 notebooks are already in the five-to-seven hour range, depending on the model, of course, so it’s only a matter of time.
The ThinkPad T420 and HP EliteBook 8460p will both be available in March through their respective business partners and websites. Pricing has been set at $1,399 for the T420 and (starting at) $999 for the EliteBook 8460p.

Battery tips – How to prolong lithium-based batteries

Battery research is focusing heavily on lithium chemistries, so much so that one could presume that all portable devices will be powered with lithium-ion batteries in the future. In many ways, lithium-ion is superior to nickel and lead-based chemistries and the applications for lithium-ion batteries are growing as a result.
Lithium-ion dv4 battery has not yet fully matured and is being improved continuously. New metal and chemical combinations are being tried every six months to increase energy density and prolong service life. The improvements in longevity after each change will not be known for a few years.
A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. Hp probook 4510s aspire 4720 battery There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.
Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as “digital memory”. Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery’s state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate.
Aging of lithium-ion is an issue that is often ignored. A lithium-ion battery in use typically lasts between 2-3 years. The capacity loss manifests itself in increased internal resistance caused by oxidation. Eventually, the cell resistance reaches a point where the pack can no longer deliver the stored energy although the battery may still have ample charge. For this reason, an aged battery can be kept longer in applications that draw low current as opposed to a function that demands heavy loads. Increasing internal resistance with cycle life and age is typical for cobalt-based lithium-ion, a system that is used for cell phones, cameras and laptops because of high energy density. The lower energy dense manganese-based lithium-ion, HP F4486B Battery, also known as spinel, maintains the internal resistance through its life but loses capacity due to chemical decompositions. Spinel is primarily used for power tools.
The speed by which lithium-ion ages is governed by temperature and state-of-charge. Figure 1 illustrates the capacity loss as a function of these two parameters.

Figure 1: Permanent capacity loss of lithium-ion as a function of temperature and charge level. High charge levels and elevated temperatures hasten permanent capacity loss. Improvements in chemistry have increased the storage performance of lithium-ion batteries.
The mentioning of limited service life on lithium-ion has caused concern in the battery industry and I will need to add some clarifications. Let me explain:
If someone asks how long we humans live, we would soon find out that the longevity varies according to life style and living conditions that exist in different countries. Similar conditions exist with the batteries, lithium-ion in particular. Since BatteryUniversity bases its information on the feedback from users as opposed to scientific information derived from a research lab, longevity results may differ from manufacturer’ specifications. Hp pavilion zv6000 battery as07b71 as07b51 battery Let’s briefly look at the various living conditions of the lithium-ion battery.
The worst condition is keeping a fully charged battery at elevated temperatures, which is the case with running laptop batteries. If used on main power, the battery inside a laptop will only last for 12-18 months.HP PP2182D Battery, I must hasten to explain that the pack does not die suddenly but begins with reduced run-times.
The voltage level to which the cells are charged also plays an important role to longevity. For safety reasons, most lithium-ion cannot exceed 4.20 volts per cell. While a higher voltage boosts capacity, the disadvantage is lower cycle life. Figure 2 shows the cycle life as a function of charge voltage.
Figure 2: Effects on cycle life at different float charge levels (Choi et al., 2002) Higher charge voltages boost capacity but lower cycle life.
There are no remedies to restore lithium-ion once worn out. A momentary improvement in performance is noticeable when heating up the battery. This lowers the internal resistance momentarily but the condition reverts back to its former state when the temperature drops. Cold temperature will increase the internal resistance.
If possible, store the battery in a cool place at about a 40% state-of-charge. Some reserve charge is needed to keep the battery and its protection circuit operational during prolonged storage. Avoid keeping the battery at full charge and high temperature. This is the case when placing a cell phone or spare battery Dell vostro 1520 battery Acer aspire 4520 Laptop battery in a hot car. Running a laptop computer on the mains has a similar temperature problem. While the battery is kept fully charged, the inside temperature during operation rises to 45°C (113°F).
Removing the battery from the laptop when running on fixed power protects the battery from heat. With the concern of the battery overheating and causing fire, a spokesperson for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises to eject the battery of affected laptops and to run the machines on a power cord. It should be noted that on a power outage,HP F4486A Battery,HP F4486B Battery,HP PP2182D Battery,HP 338794-001 Battery, unsaved works will be lost.
The question is often asked, should the laptop be disconnected from the main when not in use?HP 338794-001 Battery, Under normal circumstances, it should not matter with lithium-ion. Once the battery is fully charged, no further charge is applied. However, there is always the concern is malfunction of the AC adapter, the laptop or the battery Dell inspiron 1501 .
A large number of lithium-ion batteries for cell phones are being discarded under the warranty return policy. Some failed batteries are sent to service centers or the manufacturer, where they are refurbished. Studies show that 80%-90% of the returned batteries can be repaired and returned to service.

Battery History – When was the battery invented?

battery care tips post by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk
One of the most important discoveries in the last 400 years has been electricity. You may ask, “Has electricity been around that long?” The answer is “yes”, and perhaps much longer. Surprisingly, electricity only became useful to humanity in the late 1800s.
Figure 1: Prehistoric batteries
Clay jar with iron rod surrounded by copper cylinder. When filled with vinegar + an electrolytic, HP PP2182L Battery, solution produces 1.1 volts DC (circa. 250 BC to 640 ADO).
It is believed that the Parthians who ruled Baghdad (circa 250 BC) used batteries to electroplate silver.
The Egyptians are said to have electroplated antimony onto copper over 4300 years ago.
The earliest known methods of generating electricity were by creating a static charge. Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) invented the so-called “electric pistol” by which an electrical wire was placed in a jar filled with methane gas. HP PP2182L Battery,HP 345027-001 Battery.HP 342661-001 Battery,HP pavilion dv6000 Battery,By sending an electrical spark through the wire, the jar would explode.
Volta then thought of using this invention to provide long distance communications, albeit only one Boolean bit. An iron wire supported by wooden poles was to be strung from Como to Milan in Italy. At the receiving end, the  dell xps m1330 battery wire would terminate in a jar filled with methane gas. On command, an electrical spark is sent by wire that would cause a detonation to signal a coded event. This communications link was never built.
Figure 2: Volta and his battery.
In 1800, Alessandro Volta invented the first modern electric battery.
Volta demonstrated that an electrical current is generated when metals and chemicals come into contact.
The next stage of generating electricity was through electrolysis. Volta discovered in 1800 that a continuous flow of electrical force was possible when using certain fluids as conductors to promote a chemical reaction between metals. Volta discovered further that the voltage would increase when voltaic cells were stacked. This led to the invention of the battery.
From the availability of a battery New 9-cell dell inspiron 6400 battery . experiments were no longer limited to a brief display of sparks that lasted a fraction of a second. A seemingly endless stream of electric current was now available.
In the early 1800, France was approaching the height of scientific advancements and new ideas were welcomed with open arms to support the political agenda. By invitation, Volta addressed the Institute of France in a series of lectures in which Napoleon Bonaparte was present. Napoleon himself helped with the experiments, drawing sparks from the battery,HP PP2182L Battery,HP 345027-001 Battery.HP 342661-001 Battery,HP pavilion dv6000 Battery, melting a steel wire, discharging an electric pistol and decomposing water into its elements.

In 1802, Dr. William Cruickshank designed the first electric battery capable of mass production. Cruickshank arranged square sheets of copper soldered at their ends, intermixed with sheets of zinc of equal size. These sheets were placed into a long rectangular wooden box that was sealed with cement. Grooves in the box held the metal plates in position. The box was filled with an electrolyte of brine, or watered down acid.

New discoveries were made when Sir Humphry Davy installed the largest and most powerful electric battery in the vaults of the Royal Institution of London. He connected the battery to charcoal electrodes and produced the first electric light. HP 342661-001 Battery Witnesses reported that his voltaic arc lamp produced “the most brilliant ascending arch of light ever seen.”
All batteries at this time were primary cells, meaning that they could not be recharged. In 1859, the French physicist Gaston Planté invented the first rechargeable battery. This secondary battery was based on lead acid, a chemistry that is still used today.
History of battery development.
The battery may be much older. It is believed that the Parthians who ruled Baghdad (ca. 250 BC) used batteries to electroplate silver. The Egyptians are said to have electroplated antimony onto copper over 4300 years ago.
The third, and most significant, method of generating electricity was discovered relatively late – electricity through magnetism. In 1820, André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836) had noticed that wires carrying an electric current were at times attracted to one another, while at other times repelled. In 1831, Michael Faraday (1791-1867) demonstrated how a copper disc was able to provide a constant flow of electricity when revolved in a strong magnetic field. Faraday and his research team succeeded in generating an endless electrical force as long as the movement between a coil and magnet continued.
In 1899, Waldmar Jungner from Sweden invented the nickel-cadmium battery Dell b120 battery Dell inspiron e1505 battery (Dell 1555 battery ),In 1947, Neumann succeeded in completely sealing the cell. HP pavilion dv6000 Battery,These advances led to the modern sealed nickel-cadmium battery in use today.
Research of the nickel-metal-hydride system started in the 1970s but the metal hydride alloys were unstable in the cell environment. New hydride alloys were developed in the 1980s that improved the stability. nickel-metal-hydride became commercially available in the 1990s.
The first primary lithium batteries appeared in early 1970s. Attempts to develop rechargeable lithium batteries followed in the 1980s but failed due to safety problems. Because of inherent instability of lithium metal, especially during charging, research shifted to a non-metallic lithium battery using lithium ions. Although lower in energy density than lithium metal, lithium?ion is safe, provided certain precautions are met when charging and discharging. In 1991, the Sony Corporation commercialized the first lithium-ion battery.

Science News – New battery technology by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk

U.S. researchers say they’ve developed a new lithium-ion battery that can heal itself, last longer and provide more safety in today’s electronics.
Scientists at the University of Illinois looked at the chemistry of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries — found in cellphones, laptop computers, digital cameras and other portable electronics — and found that like all batteries they tend to break down over time, NewScientist.com reported Tuesday.

“There are many different types of degradation that happen, and fixing this degradation could help us make longer-lasting batteries,” Scott White, a UI materials engineer, said.
One site of damage is the battery’s negatively charged terminal, the anode, which swells and shrinks as the battery is charged and then discharges over time, eventually creating cracks that can interfere with the flow of current and, ultimately, kill the batteryAcer as07b51 battery Dell d830 battery .
White embedded tiny microspheres in the anode that would tear open as the anode began cracking, releasing a liquid metal alloy, indium gallium arsenide, that fills the cracks in the anode and restores the flow of electricity.
White also developed a system to keep batteries from overheating and catching fire in the event of a short circuit within the battery.
“It’s not a common occurrence, but when it happens, the consequences are severe,” White said.
White developed a second kind of microsphere made of solid polyethylene, embedded in the anode and other battery components.

  • If the temperature inside the battery rises above 221 degrees Fahrenheit, the spheres melt into a thin layer of insulating material that shuts off the flow of electricity, preventing a fire.
“We’ve tested this in real batteries,” said White, whose research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. “It works beautifully.”

Laptop Guide:The new 11-inch MacBook Air

The new 11-inch MacBook Air is one of Apple’s most interesting launches to date. This improvement on last year’s MacBook Air–unbelievably thin and light, with a regular notebook’s screen and keypad–comes with a choice of screen sizes. It is 1.7 cm at its thickest point and a bit over 1 kg, making it easy to slip it into pretty much any backpack, sling, or even handbag.
An entry-level 11-inch MacBook Air costs the same as an entry-level MacBook. This raises some questions about which option is better value for money.
Connectivity in the 11-inch MacBook Air Hp dv2000 adapter is improved with the addition of a second USB port, thankfully spaced on the right edge so oversized plugs don’t block both ports. There are even stereo speakers, as opposed to the older Air’s single mono one.
In ordinary usage, the new baby Air is a delight. No netbook so far feels as well rounded and easy to carry. On the flip side, the hardware seems to be only just about capable of running OS X. Ordinary tasks such as Web browsing work just fine, but graphics and CPU-intensive tasks in iPhoto and Garage Band can quickly bog this system down.
That said, the solid-state drive affords unbelievably fast boot and shutdown times, and resuming from standby takes barely seconds.
There is one inconvenience: The lack of a keyboard backlight–something that is associated with Apple Acer as07b71 battery Acer as07b41 battery machines. It is also not the most comfortable for extended use–while Apple promises the keyboard is full sized, it is a bit too shallow for comfort. The trackpad is typically oversized, but is centered to the MacBook’s body rather than to the keyboard, so your palms will drift across it quite often. Finally, the high-resolution screen is just a tiny bit too cramped.
Battery life is a bit of a disappointment. The 11-inch model is rated at five hours of continuous usage with Wi-Fi enabled, but we found this to be a bit of an optimistic figure. The Air’s battery also famously depletes faster depending on what software is installed, particularly things such as Flash that keep the CPU and graphics processors churning.
Apple also touts a new sleep state that allows the Air to remain suspended for up to 30 days, during which it will also resume instantly when the lid is opened. There is surprisingly little battery drain while it is asleep, but the claim of instantly resuming work is a bit exaggerated. If you need longer battery Dell wr050 battery Dell inspiron 640m battery life, you might consider the 13-inch Air, which is rated at 7 hours.
The 11-inch Air occupies a space that makes it way more than a netbook, but at a way higher price (Rs. 72,900). If you’re looking for something ultraportable just for Web surfing, you’d have to really consider whether the Air is worth the money when there are dozens of netbooks and even full-sized laptops that you could get for a lot less. If you need a Mac for work, the cost of upgrades would mean you’re spending as much as you would on a much more capable MacBook Pro.

Gadgets How To Take Care Of Your Li-ion Battery by batterylaptoppower.com

Lithium-ion batteries! They’re in your phone, your laptop and pretty much every consumer electronic device that uses rechargeable batteries these days. How should you take care of them? Old wives tales of charging batteries don’t apply here, so forget everything you thought you knew. According to Ars Technica, this is how you should use your Li-ion batteryhp 530 battery :
    • Do not let it run out completely all the time. Full discharge puts a lot of strain on the battery
    • Do not keep a Li-ion battery fully charged all the time, either. If you don’t use your battery it might suffer from capacity loss
    • Keep your battery in cooler temperatures. Hot hot heat is not good for it
    • If you’re gonna store your battery hp nc8430 battery Acer as07b41 battery , leave 40%-50% charge in and store it in a cool place (i.e. fridge).
I know, it’s hard to break old habits (I leave my laptop plugged in far too often), but taking care of your battery means better, longer juice. That’s always a good thing.

A Big Surprise – Why Nobody Can Match the iPad’s Price ?

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad last January, the biggest surprise wasn’t the actual product. (Many shrugged and called the iPad a “bigger iPhone.”) It was the price: Just $500.
Nobody expected that number, perhaps because Apple Acer as07b31 battery has traditionally aimed at the high end of the mobile computer market with MacBooks marked $1,000 and up. And perhaps we were also thrown off because Apple execs repeatedly told investors they couldn’t produce a $500 computer that wasn’t a piece of junk.
But Apple did meet that price, and the iPad isn’t junk. The iPad is still the first, and best-selling, product of  its kind. Competitors, meanwhile, are having trouble hitting that $500 sweet spot.
Motorola’s Xoom tablet is debuting in the United States with an $800 price tag. (To be fair, the most comparable iPad is $730 — but there’s no $500 Xoom planned, dell inspiron e1505 battery Dell d820 battery and the lack of a low-end entry point will hurt Motorola.) Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, with a relatively puny 7-inch screen, costs $600 without a contract.
Why is it so hard to get to a lower starting price? And how was Apple able to get there?
Jason Hiner of Tech Republic suggests it largely has to do with Apple’s retail strategy. Apple now has 300 retail stores worldwide selling iPads directly to customers. That’s advantageous, because if the iPad were primarily sold at third-party retail stores, a big chunk of profit would go to those retailers, Hiner reasons.
Apple has partnered with a few retail chains such as Best Buy and Walmart, but those stores always seem to get a small number of units in stock. Hiner rationalizes that the true purpose of these partnerships is probably to help spread the marketing message, not so much to sell iPads.
“The company can swallow the bitter pill of hardly making any money from iPad sales through its retail partners because it can feast off the fat profits it makes when Dell xps m1330 battery Dell vostro 1520 battery customers buy directly through its retail outlets and the web store,” Hiner says. “However, companies like Motorola, HP, and Samsung have to make all of their profit by selling their tablets wholesale to retailer partners.”
The retail advantage is a reasonable theory, but Hiner neglects to mention the high overhead costs that Apple must pay handsomely for each of its 300 stores. To Hiner’s credit, Apple running its own stores does present clear benefits: the customer outreach is enormous, and of course, in Apple stores, Apple products don’t have to compete with gadgets sold by rivals on other shelves.
But when we try to decipher why the iPad costs $500, we have to consider the sum of all parts, not just the retail strategy.
Apple is the most vertically integrated company in the world. In addition to operating its own retail chains, all Apple hardware and software are designed in-house, and Apple  Dell latitude e6400 battery sony Vgp-bps2c battery also runs its own digital content store, iTunes.
Designing in-house means Apple doesn’t have to pay licensing fees to third parties to use their intellectual property. For instance, the A4 chip inside the iPad is based on technology developed and owned by Apple (not Intel, AMD or Nvidia). The operating system is Apple’s own, not something licensed from Microsoft or Google.
Why do you think Hewlett-Packard bought Palm to make the TouchPad? HP wanted ownership of a mobile operating system in-house to take control of its own mobile destiny and stop being so reliant on Microsoft (which, to this day, doesn’t have a credible tablet strategy).
On the iTunes media platform, Apple takes a cut of each sale made through each of its digital storefronts:
the App Store, iBooks and iTunes music and video. iBooks still has a long way to go before it’s anywhere near as big as Amazon, but the App Store and iTunes are the most successful digital media stores of their kind.
At the end of the day, the iPad Compaq nc6000 battery might be worth well above $500 for all we know. (Part estimates made by component analysts such as iSuppli aren’t very useful because they fail to measure costs of R&D and other factors.) It’s most likely that Apple Asus m50 battery can afford to absorb the costs of producing and selling the iPad because of the tenacious ecosystem backing it, and also because it has such tight oversight over every aspect of the company to control price.
That’s what it all boils down to: ecosystems and control. Competitors are struggling to match the $500 price point because they aren’t as fully integrated as Apple, in terms of retail strategy, a digital content market, hardware and software engineering — everything.

What’s the best Android tablet for 2011? – 15 best Android tablets in the world

    best-android-tablets
Let us help you choose the best Android tablet for you .
Our list of the best Android tablets in the world – regularly updated
If you’re looking for a tablet and don’t fancy an iPad, then Android is the way to go: while Windows tablets are on the horizon, Android ones are here, they work and they’ve usually been tweaked to include finger-friendly interfaces too.
We’ve gone from zero Android tablets to stacks of the things in a very short space of time, and inevitably some are better than others.
Some have ten-inch screens, others seven and some just five, and there are big differences in battery Dell latitude e6500 battery life, processing power and on-board RAM. So which tablets are the most tempting? Let’s find out.

    samsung galaxy tab

    Samsung Galaxy Tab – £359 (Wi-Fi) / £499 (3G)

    On sale: Now
Samsung’s tablet becomes much more attractive thanks to heavy discounting: the first price above is from Tesco Direct, although the 3G model is still a good bit more expensive. It’s a decent bit of kit let down by sluggish web browsing, and we’re not convinced 7-inch tablets work as phones.
    viewsonic-viewpad-7

    Viewsonic Viewpad 7 – £300 to 400

    On sale: Now
The Viewsonic Viewpad 7 is exactly the same, albeit slightly more expensive than the Linx Commtiva N700 – and confusingly, Viewsonic is marketing it as a smartphone. It’s a terrible smartphone but it’s a fairly competent 7-inch Android tablet: its 600MHz processor isn’t really fast enough for Flash though, not to mention recent Android releases.
    advent vega

    Advent Vega – £249.99

    On sale: Now
The Vega offers a lot of power for very little cash: a ten-inch, 1024×600 touchscreen, a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and a 6.5 hours of video playback isn’t bad for just under £250. Storage is tight, though – you get a half-gig of flash storage, supplemented by a 4GB microSD card) – and the OS is Android 2.2. Flash Player Acer as07b71 battery has been pulled due to certification issues, but an update should fix that later in the year.
    motorola-xoom

    Motorola Xoom – £719.99

    On sale: tbc
One of the most interesting Android tablets won’t be cheap: online prices are currently hovering around the £720 mark. For your cash you’ll get a dual-core Tegra 2 and a 10.1″, 1280×800 display; you can also play full HD via HDMI. The Xoom has 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (plus an SD card slot), twin cameras, Wi-Fi and optional 3G. Motorola claims 10 hours of video-watching power.

    dell streak

    Dell Streak 5 / 7 / 10 – £399 / £TBC / £TBC

The eminently capable and exceptionally small Dell Streak 5 has been around for a while, but it’s about to be joined by the more powerful Dell Streak 7 (7-inch) and Dell Streak 10 (10-inch) versions. Where the Dell Streak 5 runs a Snapdragon processor, its bigger siblings will be packing dual-core Tegra processors. All models boast Gorilla Glass, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Flash 10.1 support.
    asus eee pad memo

Asus Eee Pad Transformer / Slider / Memo – £tbc

    On sale: TBC
Asus has not one, not two, but three interesting Android tablets. The Eee Pad Transformer has a full-sized keyboard dock, the Eee Pad Slider has a slide-out keyboard, and the Eee Pad Memo has no keyboard at all. Bigger Eee Pads have Tegra 2s inside, while the Dell d630 battery Memo has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon.

    Creative Ziio – £249.99

    On sale: Now (10-inch TBC)
Take one fairly standard Android tablet and add a dash of Creative’s famous audio flair. The result? Something with “pure Android audio”, which offers high quality wireless audio via Bluetooth and pretty nifty sound when you use headphones. It’s an older tablet, however, which means Android 2.1.

    On sale: TBC
We called the original Viewpad 10 a stinker, so what about its successor? It runs Android 2.2 with its own Tap overlay, there’s a 1GHz processor inside, and there’s a very useful option to give each family member their own account. We wish the iPad Dell latitude e6400 battery had that. The 10s is a vast improvement over its predecessor, although we’ll reserve final judgement until we know the price.

    Notion Ink Adam – £tbc

On sale: now (but not in the UK)
A UK release date still hasn’t been confirmed, but some overseas customers are getting their pre-ordered Adams this week. The Adam promises a “revolutionary” 10.1-inch display offering 1,024×600 with a sunlight-friendly e-paper mode, and the innards are pretty decent too: the processor is a dual-core 1GHz Tegra, there’s 1GB of RAM and you can choose from 16GB or 32GB of storage, expandable via MicroSD. Claimed battery life is 6 to 16 hours.

Toshiba tablet review : Tablet on Hands

What we can’t tell you about the Android 3 tablet Toshiba will be shipping in the UK in two to three months’ time: the name or the price (they’ll be announced in April and we know it will cost more than the £300 price tag for the relaunched Folio 100 with Android 2.2 and Flash).
What we can tell you: the Toshiba tablet is a true multimedia tablet with lots of extras.
What we saw this week is a prototype, complete with tape holding system parts in place under the battery Toshiba pa3258u-1brs battery , Android 2.2 instead of the Honeycomb it will ship with and the hardware buttons Google will banish as part of the Android 3 certification process (which is a shame with buttons like these, which have haptic feedback and light up to show you’ve pressed them).
    Toshiba tablet multitouch
MULTITOUCH: The 10.1″ screen is bright, vivid and responds quickly to gestures
We tried out all the key tools that will take whatever Toshiba decides to call this tablet from yet another Honeycomb device with a 10.1″ 1280 x 800 multi-touch capacitive screen, to something that has an impressive multimedia experience, powered by the Tegra 2 chip.
As well as the Android Market the tablet will also come with Toshiba’s own Marketplace, which is part of the Toshiba Places content service that will also be launching on Toshiba TVs and notebooks.
Already available in France, Places includes free online content from sites like DailyMotion, pay-for movie rental, streaming TV content (including BBC iPlayer) and social networking Toshiba pa3465u-1brs battery Acer extensa 5220 battery .
So far we know it supports Flickr and you can email links to videos to friends as well as sharing photos with a specific group of people. Because Places will be on different devices, if you have several Toshiba devices you can start watching a video on your TV, pause it and save a bookmark and start watching from the same place on your tablet.
If the video you’re watching is in standard definition, it plays with the same Resolution+ tech that upscales content on Toshiba’s high-end TVs like the new RL, SL and UL models (which also have the Places service).
    Resolution plus
UPSCALED: Resolution+ upscaling in action; details are clearer, colours are brighter
Toshiba’s Graeme Simons told TechRadar this gives “near HD output, making the colours more vivid and saturated and the details crisper”. We’re not sure it’s that close to HD but images are visibly clearer, brighter and have better colours (and the quality of the screen is impressive).
The Ambient Display also Acer aspire 6935g battery hp 530 battery improves the image you see on screen; it uses the webcam to measure the ambient lighting and controls the screen brightness and colour saturation to compensate for conditions and it was certainly bright and vivid even in very bright lighting.
    Toshiba tablet cameras
AUTO ADJUST: The microphone and webcam are also used to detect ambient light and noise to improve sound and video playback
The system also samples the background noise and uses dynamic equalisation to adjust the levels and volume without too much distortion; again, we could enjoy the sound in a fairly noisy room.
    TV on tablet
We tried the full effect streaming BBC iPlayer Acer as07b71 battery over a very congested Wi-Fi network (the tablet has 802.11 b, g and n and a 3G model will be available six weeks to two months after the Wi-Fi models ship).
    iPlayer
IPLAYER: BBC iPlayer in action: video plays smoothly and is very watchable
Playing full screen, the video is smooth and enjoyable to watch (although pumping it out to a big-screen TV over HDMI shows that the Resolution+ upscaling works for the tablet screen size, not the TV screen size; we could still see the jaggies you’d expect from watching a video stream intended for a 10″ screen – understandable, but a good reality check on what you can expect when you take online video to your TV via a tablet).
    Toshiba tablet multimedia
MULTIMEDIA: The Tegra 2 processor in action, powering video
If you have true HD content, the full size HDMI port lets you plug into a TV and output 1080p Toshiba pa3593u-1bas battery (again courtesy of the Tegra 2 chip).
There’s also a full-size USB host port, so you can plug in an external hard drive or a camera to get content, plus a mini USB port so you can plug the tablet into your PC to transfer files, and SD card slot so you can get pictures from a camera directly or add extra storage.
    Toshiba tablet ports
PORTS: Full size USB and HDMI give you easy connection options
There are actually two cameras: a 5 megapixel on the back for snapping photos and videos (although we’re not sure how easy it’s going to be to hold up a 10″ tablet to get a snap) and a 2 megapixel webcam on the front that Toshiba makes a feature of, with a chrome surround.
    Other Toshiba tablet features
The ports are tucked away neatly behind covers; with rounded edges and no sharp port edges, it’s comfortable to hold.
The volume and power buttons are flush with the edge of the case, but they’re also big enough to find quickly with your fingers.
    Volume and power controls
VOLUME AND POWER CONTROLS: Neat but large enough to use
The capacitive screen is responsive; swiping and pinch zoom gestures are fast and fluid. The back of the case has a rubberised coating and a distinct ridged pattern that makes it very easy to grip. It snaps off to give you access to the battery. Toshiba isn’t quoting battery Toshiba pa3594u-1brs battery life yet, but the 23Wh battery should give a reasonable run time, and it’s replaceable so you can carry a spare if you really want.
    Toshiba tablet back
GRIPPY: The ridged back cover means you won’t lose your grip; that matters on a larger tablet that’s going to feel heavy after a while
    Toshiba tablet battery
BATTERY: Slide the latches at the side and the large battery pops out so you can carry a spare or replace it if you’re still using the tablet when the battery stops holding charge
You can also change the back if you don’t like the basic black colour scheme; Toshiba will offer replacement covers in five colours – Silver, Denim, Lime Green, Magenta and Amethyst.
    Toshiba tablet
UNDER THE HOOD: The back of the tablet snaps off easily to get at the battery and SIM slot, or just to change the colour
There are other nice features. The haptic feedback is more subtle than on many Android phones toshiba Pa3534u-1bas battery ; until we see the final interface it’s hard to tell how much it will help on-screen typing.
There’s also an internal gyroscope and accelerometer for gaming; expect driving games that let you turn the screen like a steering wheel.
Put it all together and Toshiba’s nameless tablet looks like it could stand out from the Honeycomb crowd, providing the price is right.

Laptop Battery Care Tips – www.goodlaptopbattery.co.uk

The latest desktop computers are powerful enough for home users to conduct a variety of operations all at the same time without causing any noticeable slowdowns. But when it comes to portability, you can leave it to the laptops as laptops have drastically improved throughout the years to be just as powerful as their desktop counterparts.

Miniaturization technologies allow powerful components to be downsized while retaining the Compaq nc4200 battery power that continues to make them reliable for different tasks. However, they require more care as abuse can cause damage to the battery rending the laptop powerless.
    What are laptop batteries
Laptop batteries are the laptop’s main power source as soon as they are unplugged. Each battery has a specific voltage where higher volts mean longer battery life. These batteries may also be charged so they can be used next time traveling is needed. The average length of the battery is around 2-3 hour and can be even more depending on the hardware specifications and operating system running.

Why you should care for your laptop battery

Laptop batteries dell d630 battery Hp pavilion dv4 battery should be treated with care the same way other rechargeable batteries are treated as their overall lifespan decreases after every full charge cycle. Even if you don’t plan to travel often with your laptop, you should still take care of the battery as the adapter provides power to the battery and any damage to that battery can lead to other problems with nearby laptop components. Buying a spare battery can be quite expensive and might take long to get because most likely you’ll order to get one as most batteries cannot be found in stores.
Tips on caring for laptop battery
Calibration is key to caring for your pink laptop. If you are fond of traveling with your laptop and frequently using it on battery, be sure to use it while plugged in whenever you can as well. Then every week or month, drain the battery by any means and then charge it for a few hours so it is full again. Some laptops may have special calibration tools that may make the process easier so check the instruction manual and make use of those.
Try not to charge the battery while it isn’t fully drained either. Although it won’t affect the battery very much, getting used to the habit may lead to you replacing your battery dell vostro 1500 battery Hp pavilion dv6 battery even sooner.

iPhone & battery power news – Less-Pricey iPhone in the Works

Apple Inc. is working on the first of a new line of less-expensive iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition.
Apple is preparing to roll out a series of lower-priced iPhones to compete with other smartphones on the market. The new models will run about half the cost of existing iPhones.
One of the people, who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said it is intended for sale alongside Apple’s existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model.
The new phone—one of its code names is N97—would be available to carriers at about half the price of the main iPhones. That would allow carriers to subsidize most or all of the retail price, putting the iPhone in the same mass-market price range as rival smartphones, the person said. Apple currently sells iPhones to carriers for $625 each on average. With carrier subsidies, consumers can buy iPhones for as little as $199 with a two-year contract.
Where the new line would be introduced couldn’t be learned, but Apple recently has released products first in the U.S. and a few other Acer batbl50l6 battery markets before rolling out the devices more broadly.
Three weeks into his medical leave, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is staying closely involved in the company’s decisions and product development, Yukari Kane reports.
Apple also is exploring a major revamp of its MobileMe online storage service, the people familiar with the matter said. The service, which lets users store data in a central location and synchronize their calendars and contacts among computers and other devices, currently has an individual annual subscription fee of $99. Apple is considering making MobileMe a free service that would serve as a “locker” for personal memorabilia such as photos, music and videos, eliminating the need for devices to carry a lot of memory, the people familiar with the situation said.
MobileMe, part of an industry wave known as cloud computing, also could become a focal point for a new online music service that Apple has been developing for more than a year, the people said. Social networking would be another key component, one of the people said.
MobileMe and the new Hp pavilion dv4 battery Hp pavilion dv6 battery line of iPhones are among the top priorities of Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, one of the people said. Though Mr. Jobs, 55 years old, went on medical leave for an undisclosed health issue last month, he has been closely involved in the development efforts, the person said.
The new line of iPhones and the revamped MobileMe are intended for release this summer, though those plans could change, the person said.

    Timeline: Jobs & Apple

Mr. Jobs by email declined comment. An Apple spokeswoman also declined comment.
Bloomberg News reported earlier that Apple was working on a smaller, less-expensive iPhone.
Apple’s work on the iPhone and MobileMe come as the cellphone market is heating up. Nokia Corp. last week said it would adopt Microsoft Corp,’s Windows Phone as the Finnish company’s main smartphone operating system. Hewlett – Packard Co. meanwhile unveiled a tablet computer and smartphones based on a platform the company acquired last year.
Cellphone makers are expected to introduce an array of new models at an industry conference this week in Barcelona. Many of them will likely run on Google Inc.’s Android operating system. Research company IDC expects global sales of smartphones to rise 39% this year Hp nc8000 battery to 421 million units.
The iPhone has led much of the cellphone industry’s innovation, and 84.2 million units have been sold since the device was introduced in 2007. Still, the iPhone’s industry-wide global market share was just 3.4% last year, according to IDC, in part because of the device’s higher price compared with many other phones.
IPhones nevertheless are critical for Apple, generating 39% of the $26.7 billion in company revenue for the latest quarter. Apple last week began selling its iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless, a move that could add seven to 13 million units in sales this year, according to analysts. The carrier is a joint venture of Vodafone Group PLC and Verizon Communications Inc.
The person who saw the prototype of the new iPhone said the device was significantly lighter than the iPhone 4 and had an edge-to-edge screen that could be manipulated by touch, as well as a virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation. The person said Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., also plans to upgrade the iPhone 4.
The new MobileMe file-storage and Hp dv2000 battery hp nc8230 battery music service could be available as early as June, depending on the progress of licensing talks that are in their preliminary stages, the people familiar with the situation said. Apple had planned for the service to roll out a year earlier.
The new service would give users access to their iTunes libraries from, say, an iPhone or iPad, instead of requiring that the devices be synced by cable with a computer and use space to store the actual files, the people said. The new service likely would be compatible with the iPhone 4, one of the people said.
Some MobileMe features, such as a service that locates lost or stolen iPads and iPhones, already are free.

This is what Microsoft’s next tablet project should look like

I have to admit that I am what most people call a ‘Microsoft fanboy.’ It’s something that I take a bit of flak for, but not a branding that I mind. Everyone has an opinion, I just usually end up agreeing with Redmond.
Not on tablets. Microsoft is walking the exact wrong route with tablet and slate computers, so much so that I have to question their judgement. It would be one thing if the company had taken a single misstep, but Redmond had been taking the wrong approach for a decade now.
Ten solid years of the repeating the same mistake is a rather impressive, if sad, track record. What exactly is the problem with the Microsoft approach to slate and tablet Hp pavilion dv9700 battery Acer as07b51 battery (touch), handheld and lap-sized computing? They want it to run Windows, and that will never work. To quote myself from June:
While Windows 7 is in my opinion the best operating system for normal computers, and even netbooks I presume, for a tablet computer it is unusable. Windows is suitable for a netbook computing as it employs the same input mechanisms as its more powerful counterparts. Windows was an easy port.
Tablets utilize different methods of input, which renders Windows 7 a scurvy mess. Trust me, I know. I have Windows 7 Professional on a convertible tablet/laptop. The touch abilities are only useful for scrolling through Word documents. They have no other use.
This is the exact same problem that the Origami/UMPC project had: a full Windows install on a small screen that you are supposed to touch does not work. It will never work.
With UMPCs Microsoft did put together an interesting touch package, a dashboard if you will, that was designed to be poked and prodded. It was a step in the right direction, but the damn devices were still designed to run Windows. They dropped like a rock. Microsoft is set to announce another set of tablets Dell d820 battery Dell wr050 battery this coming CES that suffer from similar core design flaws. It’s enough to make you wince.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Microsoft has two already built tools, that if they tweaked could be combined into a rather compelling tablet experience that I would like to buy. Fanboy or not, I want Microsoft to succeed in the tablet wars; I feel somewhat guilty giving Apple hell all day then cuddling with my iPad at night.
My suggestion to Microsoft is this: fuse Windows Phone 7′s operating system with Office Live for a marriage of convenience, ease of use, and productivity.
Everyone loves Windows Phone 7′s UI because it is based (partly) on Zune’s, which is universally acclaimed. It would fit wonderfully on a tablet. Office Live is an excellent, albeit stripped down, version of Office that lives in the cloud and is a delight Dell vostro 1520 battery to use. Microsoft wants their tablets to be suitable for businessmen and women? Then the company could meld Office Live even deeper than Office currently is into WP7 for an excellent slate productivity experience.
Then all Redmond has to do is expand the WP7 tile layout to fit a tablet, design a bigger soft keyboard, and drop it on a 9 inch device. I would buy one tomorrow.
In their race to rule the enterprise everywhere (including mobile), Microsoft is too focused on business use-cases that happen in the office consistently, but almost never occur while workers are mobile. Why keep chasing a scenario that doesn’t exist? Generally speaking, on the bus people are not going to be writing reports. They may read reports, but that is a different game altogether. Mobile tablets are slightly more consumer in nature, by their intrinsic use alone.
I want my WP7/Office Live tablet, and I want it now. Sound off in the comments if you would pick one up.

Battery News – MIT Develops New High-Powered Battery

With the world going mobile and billions of new devices requiring electrical storage, battery technology is almost certainly due for a renaissance in the near future…and recent developments suggest MIT will play a role in the next significant battery Asus m50 battery technology.
Less than a week ago, we reported on work being done byMIT’s Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems (LEES) that could become the first technologically significant and economically viable alternative to conventional batteries in 200 years. Now, a second new and highly promising battery technology is emerging from MIT – a new type of lithium battery that could become a cheaper alternative to the batteries that now power hybrid electric cars.
Until now, lithium batteries Fujifilm NP-70 battery Ibm thinkpad r60 battery have not had the rapid charging capability or safety level needed for use in cars. Hybrid cars now run on nickel metal hydride batteries, which power an electric motor and can rapidly recharge while the car is decelerating or standing still.
But lithium nickel manganese oxide, described in a paper to be published in Science on Feb. 17, could revolutionize the hybrid car industry — a sector that has “enormous growth potential,” says Gerbrand Ceder, MIT professor of materials science and engineering, who led the project.
“The writing is on the wall. It’s clearly happening,” said Ceder, who said that a couple of companies are already interested in licensing the new lithium battery technology.
The new material is more stable (and thus safer) than lithium cobalt oxide batteries, which are used to power small electronic devices like cell phones, laptop computers, rechargeable personal digital assistants (PDAs) and such medical devices as pacemakers.
The small safety risk posed by lithium cobalt oxide is manageable in small devices but makes the material not viable for the larger batteries Compaq nc6000 battery needed to run hybrid cars, Ceder said. Cobalt is also fairly expensive, he said.
The MIT team’s new lithium battery contains manganese and nickel, which are cheaper than cobalt.
Scientists already knew that lithium nickel manganese oxide could store a lot of energy, but the material took too long to charge to be commercially useful. The MIT researchers set out to modify the material’s structure to make it capable of charging and discharging more quickly.
Lithium nickel manganese oxide consists of layers of metal (nickel and manganese) separated from lithium layers by oxygen. The major problem with the compound was that the crystalline structure was too “disordered,” meaning that the nickel and lithium were drawn to each other, interfering with the flow of lithium ions and slowing down the charging rate.
Lithium ions carry the battery’s Gateway btp-68b3 battery Acer aspire 5520 battery charge, so to maximize the speed at which the battery can charge and discharge, the researchers designed and synthesized a material with a very ordered crystalline structure, allowing lithium ions to freely flow between the metal layers.
A battery made from the new material can charge or discharge in about 10 minutes — about 10 times faster than the unmodified lithium nickel manganese oxide. That brings it much closer to the timeframe needed for hybrid car batteries, Ceder said.
Before the material can be used commercially, the manufacturing process needs to be made less expensive, and a few other modifications will likely be necessary, Ceder said.
Other potential applications for the new lithium battery include power tools, electric bikes, and power backup for renewable energy sources.
The lead author on the research paper is Kisuk Kang, a graduate student in Ceder’s lab. Ying Shirley Meng, a postdoctoral Sony vgp-bps13 battery associate in materials science and engineering at MIT, and Julien Breger and Clare P. Grey of the State University of New York at Stony Brook are also authors on the paper.
The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.
