Will Apple Redefine the Cloud? post by www.batterylaptoppower.com

Apple Cloud I've long since stopped kvetching over the number of things Apple chief executive Steve Jobs can attach an "i" to and call his own. The maverick CEO's track recod is just too darn good. Now that we know that Apple's iCloud is a real thing, there's no sense in wondering how Jobs can have the gall to rebrand cloud computing. I'd rather focus on what Apple will do with the cl...er... iCloud now that Apple has adopted it as its own.

Is Apple new to the cloud? (Sorry, it'll take me a while to get used to calling it the iCloud.) If you accept that at the most fundamental level, cloud computing is simply a matter of thin clients (hardware or software) accessing Internet-based services and intelligence, then the answer is no. Consider Apple's reliance on streaming services for AppleTV's TV show and movie rentals, or the way genius playlists work.

iCloud, which Apple will officially unveil at next week's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), will be more, and streaming content is only the beginning. Obviously, we expect some sort of cloud-based, access-anywhere music library. Apple may even cave and offer a subscription-based music service. These plans will only succeed if Apple has done what Google failed to do with Google Music Beta: convince the major labels to let consumers store and access purchased (and rented) music from central servers.

I think music labels fear this not only because they worry about losing further control of the digital bits that make up their vast song libraries, but because no one will ever buy more than one copy of a song again, and if they get subscription access, they're done buying music—period.

This is as it should be, but all those lost revenues scare the labels. I bet they scare Apple a bit, too. Apple seems only too happy to let iTunes members buy songs again as they try, often unsuccessfully, to transfer songs from one device to another.

The End of Headaches

For me, the greatest potential benefit of a cloud service from Apple is that I will finally be able to upgrade computers and buy new Apple devices without worrying about losing access to my song libraries. I would also like to see Apple move iTunes profiles into the cloud. Right now, what Apple knows about your iTunes existence seems split between local devices and its services. iTunes knows which Apps and music I've bought, but if I don't remember to transfer purchases from the device to my computer, Apple warns me I could lose what I bought. This is obviously ridiculous. Apple knows which iTunes account and credit card bought which pieces of content. If I'm logged in and have verified my payment information, I should never have to worry about losing music, movies or TV shows again. The iCloud should make this possible.

One thing I've learned from Google, the Chrome OS and Google Docs is that I really do like the idea of writing in the clouds. I start a document on one computer, close it, boot up another in a different location, log into my Google account and continue right where I left off. Apple's mobile devices let us create and capture all manner of content. Why should any of it be trapped on a single device? When I prepare to stop using an Apple device I'm testing, I always worry that I'm about to lose all the photos and videos I captured, despite the fact that I always use the exact same user iTunes ID. Apple's cloud should recognize, just as Google's does, that I will sign into countless machines just to access my cloud-based mail, documents, photos and video.

Even with the introduction of iCloud, this hardware-agnostic vision may be hard for Apple to swallow. Google is not a hardware company, so it only truly cares about you using its cloud-based services from all of your devices, regardless of manufacturer. Apple still very much wants you to buy iPads, iPhones and iPods.
For better or worse, Apple's cloud, or iCloud will be built in Apple's image, one that prefers a closed ecosystem. Though I want iTunes to become a lightweight, web-based client that you can access from anywhere, I worry that Apple will still insist on a hefty installation and frequent updates. Even with the iCloud, I bet more of your iTunes content will be local than on any other cloud-connected service.

It's a shame, really. I'm excited that Apple is ready to embrace the cloud, but I cannot help feeling that the hold will be loose and tentative. On the other hand, if Apple is bold enough to rebrand the cloud as iCloud, then perhaps whatever Steve Jobs unveils next week will be like distant thunder, only a precursor to the storm of cloud-based engagement that is to come.

APPLE's iPad and the Android Tablets are just the medicine for newspapers

APPLE's iPad and the Android-based tablet devices about to flood the market will be a game-changer for the newspaper business, says a leading media and technology analyst.

''Newspapers for many years have been looking for this kind of device to charge users for content, and the internet was never that,'' said Foad Fadaghi, research director at consultancy Telsyte.

His comments come ahead of tomorrow's launch by The Age of a native iPad app.

Apple Compaq pavilion dv4 battery Toshiba pa3465u-1brs battery has sold more than 20 million iPads since the device went on sale in April 2010. The company does not release sales figures for the Australian market but Mr Fadaghi estimates that by the end of this year Apple will have sold about 1 million iPads here.

The uptake of tablets is likely to swell as the market is flooded with non-Apple devices, mostly using Google's Android platform. But people will only buy tablets if there is enough unique content to make it worth their while.

''In the tablet world, media guys should have more power because the content offers a strong value proposition,'' said Mr Fadaghi.

At some point, he said, tablets come down in cost to such a degree that it might become feasible for media companies to give them away to subscribers as part of a bundled deal, just as telcos already do with mobile phones bundled with data and call plans.

The importance of content as a driver of sales was underlined by Apple's decision to co-develop with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp Dell latitude e6500 battery hp pavilion dv4 battery  the world's first iPad-only newspaper, at an estimated start-up cost of $US30 million.

The Daily was launched in the US in February, as much a showcase for the capabilities of the device as it was a money-spinner. Figures released recently showed The Daily had lost $US10 million in the first quarter of this year, while Mr Murdoch was quoted the day before its launch saying it would cost $US500,000 a week to run.

The costs on Fairfax's soon-to-be-released apps for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald are likely to be considerably lower than that, but the ambitions are just as high.

''The iPad as a product is very exciting,'' said Jack Matthews, head of Fairfax's metropolitan media division.
''But more importantly, it's a catalyst for change. You can't charge on one platform for content that you give away for free on another.''

Creating a compelling product Hp pavilion dv7 battery hp nc6400 battery  is one thing, but shifting consumer behaviour is another, and the great challenge facing media companies will be convincing them to pay.

The Daily has reportedly been downloaded more than 800,000 times since launch, but many of those usages have been on free trial packages.

''Consumers have had 10 years' experience of getting free news on their web browsers,'' said Mr Fadaghi.
''Getting past that is a huge task. Media companies will need to offer something else, to focus on the functionality and features of the devices.''

That might include using GPS to target readers with localised advertising, he said, or it might involve charging readers a premium to opt out of advertising entirely.

''Is the tablet journalism's saviour? It's far too early to think like that,'' said Age editor-in-chief Paul Ramadge. ''Some readers like print. Others like portable devices. That said, our forthcoming app is very exciting - an enticing window into the future and its possibilities.''

Microsoft Review - Mango release of the Windows Phone

For the Mango release of the Windows Phone, due out this fall, Microsoft is still focused on creating a uniquely intuitive mobile UI for end users who are first and foremost consumers. But among the 500 changes are at least six that improve Windows Phone for business users and their IT departments.

The enterprise changes fall into two main groups: a trio of IT-oriented tweaks; and others designed to let Windows Phone work more closely and smoothly with your existing Microsoft business infrastructure, which has been a key part of Microsoft's Compaq nc6400 battery hp 2230s battery mobile strategy from the outset. [See from October 2010, "Windows Phone 7 takes Office, SharePoint to new level on mobile."]

WINDOWS PHONE 7 MANGO: A Visual Tour of the New Features

[ Keep your finger on the pulse with the latest developments in mobile technology—such as phones and tablets—in Computerworld's Mobility & Wireless newsletter ]

What's still missing is the capacity to treat Windows Phone handsets as full clients to Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012. The second beta test version of SCCM 2012 was released in March. [More details are online at Microsoft.] The 2012 version is intended to unify "client management and protection across mobile, physical, and virtual environments," according to Microsoft.

The mobile platforms supported will include Windows Phone, Symbian, iOS and Android. Although SCCM 2012 will support these natively, it will do so only via the capabilities of Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), a protocol developed to let mobile devices synchronize information on Exchange Server 2010. Besides pushing emails to smartphones, EAS also includes a range of management and security features such as setting password policies and remotely wiping a lost smartphone. Apple and Google are among the EAS licenses, using it with their mobile OS platforms.

Currently, with the existing version of SCCM, enterprises have to make use of third-party applications such as Odyssey Software's Athena for Configuration Manager product.

Mango's IT-specific improvements

1. Alphanumeric PIN/password: Currently, Windows Phone lets you only set simple PINs. With alphanumeric support, these can become more complex, and harder to guess or to break in a brute force attack.

2. Information Rights Management (IRM): IT, or if desired, end users, can set security and management policies for Exchange emails and their attachments. For example, a certain class of documents or a specific one can be blocked from forwarding or printing. A Mango phone that gets an IRM-protected email will check for its credentials, and then manage the message based on relevant policies.

3. Support for hidden corporate Wi-Fi networks: Mango phones Compaq nc6400 battery hp nc6400 battery will be able to connect to enterprise WLANs that have hidden SSIDs without having to use a separate application to uncover the network.
"We currently support the EAS capabilities most commonly asked for by our [enterprise] customers," says Paul Bryan, senior director of product management for Windows Phone. "We feel pretty confident it covers the majority of customer needs."

Mango's general business-related improvements

4. Powerful new Web browser: a mobile version of Internet Explorer 9 will ship with Mango, with support for the emerging HTML5 specification. "The browsing capabilities of the phone are one of the core aspects where we need to excel," says Bryan. The Windows Phone hardware specification requires a separate graphics chip. IE9 will directly exploit that silicon to dramatically improve Web graphics and interactivity. In addition, HTML5 will enable a new generation of Web applications, with more of the richness and interactivity of applications that run natively on the handset.

5. Unified communications client: Windows Phone Panasonic EY9251 battery Symbol MC9060 battery already offers a native SharePoint client. The Mango-based free Lync Mobile app will let you connect directly to Microsoft Lync, the revamped and renamed Office Communications Server for integrating presence, IM, voice, conferencing, and other collaboration functions. [See our Insider review of Lync 2010, one-time registration required.] The Mango Lync app will work with either a Lync server behind the corporate firewall or the cloud-based alternative due out shortly as part of the upcoming Microsoft Office 365 bundle of online services (currently in beta). Mango can use an Office 365 account and password to auto-provision the Windows Phone Office Hub, which clusters Office-related apps, with direct links to these and other services.

6. Email improvements: Mango lets you pin an Exchange email folder to the Start screen, acting like a Windows Phone Live Tile showing the number of new, unread messages in that folder; multiple mail inboxes can be linked into one Live Tile, giving a single view of separate inboxes; Mango lets you extend email searches from the phone to the corporate exchange server; emails can be organized into "conversations" so you can track them and keep up with messages on a specific topic or issue; and save and share Microsoft Office documents on both Office 365 and Windows Live SkyDrive.

sound adds review - Hound for iPhone, Android and iPad

Hound is an app that's like a reverse Shazam. Made by SoundHound (a Shazam-like app), it's a voice recognition app where you say a song title or artist and Hound will gather all the relevant details in one tidy page.

More related business yo maybe like :

What is it?

Hound, Free, iPhone, Android & iPad. Say you already know a song or artist but you want to find the lyrics or just get more info, all you do is fire up Hound and speak into the app and it'll pop out all the stuff you want to know. The voice recognition part of Hound is great—it's the future!—but the results page of Hound is what will keep it on your phone.

Like SoundHound, Hound will spit out a ton of information for you. If you're searching for a song you'll get lyrics, YouTube clips, an iTunes link, a Pandora station link, ringtones, similar artists and sharing options. If you're looking for an artist you'll be loaded with their bio, concert dates, a full discography and more.
Essentially, Hound is like a really, really good music-specific search engine.

Who's it good for?

People who like music. People who want to know more about music. People who are good at remembering song names and artist titles. People who think voice recognition is fun as hell.

Why's it better than alternatives?

When you type a song name or artist into the Google, you never really know what you're going to get. With Hound, it's all about getting the HP dv9000 battery HP nc8430 battery relevant music info. It's nice to have a place to search where you won't run into a lot of crap. I'm going to use Hound as my sole lyrics search engine from now on. Oh, and using your voice to search is fun too.

Hound for iPhone, Android and iPad

How could it be even better?

The home screen lacks a search option—search is there, if Hound can't find your result, it'll give you a list with search—which is weird because when you already know the song, typing it out can be easier than saying it. Some kind of search history would be fun. It's weird that this is a standalone app, I think it works better as a feature within SoundHound. And lastly, the voice search can be good but it misidentifies songs more often than you'd like.

Review : iPhone 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S II's war , who will win?

We all know that Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the latest smartphone from Samsung that has landed in the arena to fight with the Apple iPhone 4. Personally, the battle is actually not between the Galaxy S 2 and iPhone 4, it was between the predecessor of Galaxy S 2 and iPhone 4. Both were released in 2010 and turned out to be the best selling smartphones of all the time. In fact, it was Samsung Galaxy S in the US after iPhone 4 that  had the record of largest selling device. Let us keep aside the history and move to the future. So, the question arises – does Apple iPhone 4 still have the capability to beat the Galaxy S successor – Samsung Galaxy S 2 even after the one year of its launch ?

Hardware :

Samsung Galaxy S II comes packed with a dual core 1.2 Ghz cortex A9 processor which eventually boosts the overall performance of the device and changes can be felt when you open and switch between the applications during multitasking. On the other hand, iPhone 4 Acer as07b41 battery Compaq nc4400 battery has an Apple A4 chip which is a single core. Opening as well as switching in between the applications in iPhone 4 could be a bit lag when compared with Samsung Galaxy S 2. So, we declare Galaxy S 2 as a clear winner here.

Software :

iOS is one of the intuitive and simplest OS in the world and no one needs a tutorial to learn it from anywhere. Once you get it in your hands, you already know what you have to do with it whereas Android OS have been customized in the Samsung Galaxy S 2 through the touchviz 4.0 which doesn’t guarantees you the pure google (you won’t need Nexus S for it). Apple constantly provides you the software upgrades frequently with each releases. So, you don’t need to worry about whether you will get the future updates or not. Android has different story altogether. You have to depend on the manufacturer to push the software upgrades, not Google itself which is a huge limitation. Without a doubt, Apple wins the battle here.

Display :

Samsung, for the first time, has come out with another quality of display called as super AMOLED plus which has been brilliantly implemented in the Samsung Galaxy S 2. The 4.3 inch (480 x 800 pixels) screen is just the another reason to buy this smartphone. On the other hand, iPhone 4 has a retina display with 326ppi (pixels per inch) that Apple claimed to be the finest display on earth and none could reach even close to that. But we have to say that Samsung has find the way to overcome that barrier. Super AMOLED plus delivers the excellent quality.

Battery life :

Being built in the OLED panel, the Samsung Galaxy S 2 display only illuminates the pixels that are needed to display the content. Hence, increasing the battery life. After turning on all the notifications including Gmail and twitter, the battery holds the phone even for a longer when connected to a wifi network. It has a stand by time of up to 710hours on 2G, 610 hours on 3G and talk time of up to 18h 20 min on 2G and up to 8h 40 min on 3G. On the flip side, iPhone 4 has standby time Up to 300 h (2G) / Up to 300 h (3G) and talk time Up to 14 h (2G) / Up to 7 h (3G). Here, it seems that Galaxy S 2 is winning the battle but we will let the user decide on it.

Camera :

Samsung Galaxy S 2 has a rear facing 8 mega pixel and 2 megapixel front facing camera with an excellent clarity whereas iPhone 4 has 5 mega pixel rear and VGA for the FaceTime calling (video conference) camera at the front. History to be told, Apple HP nc8430 battery HP dv9000 battery has a record of easily competing in this arena with the popular IT companies of the world. A 5 megapixel camera of iPhone 4 can be compared with other cameras and surpassed them well. But Samsung has amazingly defeated the iPhone 4 with the Galaxy S successor. The pictures taken from the 8 mega pixel camera looks real and even records HD videos at 1080p without slowing down the phone. Front facing cameras are self defined.

Loudspeaker/speaker :

Unlike other smartphones, the sound system in iPhone 4 has been properly designed which is neither too high nor too low whereas Samsung Galaxy S 2 sound system seems to outburst the speakers. Some people have complained that the positioning of the Galaxy S 2 is not at the right place. A singly finger can can mute almost everything at times. No doubt that Apple has designed iPhone 4 better than others when it comes to a design.

App Store/Android Market :

Now, this is the place where everything ends. Apple iPhone 4 built in iOS provides you billions of applications at your fingertips. Just visit the store, search the category and download right on your iPhone. You will find application/games for almost everything. Android doesn’t seem to do this job perfectly. When you enter the Android market, you feel a bit confused on what applications to download other than Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare etc. The distribution of applications in the android market place has not been rightly managed. Also, forget about the billions of applications/games if you are wondering for Android. In short – Apple Store wins over Android Market.

Review Apple Retail 2.0 - a great use of iPads to product information

After reading Darrell’s excellent appraisal of Apple’s new retail model, I had to run out and see it for myself. After all, 10 years ago Apple’s minimalist approach was unusual and out of step. Is Apple Retail 2.0 a step forward, or a step back?

Upon walking in, I was struck with how open the store felt. In the past, the tables seemed cluttered with signage and retail display holders. Now there is more of a flow into the back of the store. Gone is all paper, including the gift cards that typically cluttered the tables. Putting the smaller items such as the iPods, iPhones, and laptops dell latitude d620 battery dell inspiron 6400 battery in the front opens up the store quite a bit.

Apple’s strategy of having a table for each product is still in place, but tasteful clear plastic signage rises from the center or each, with the product name in black framed by a frosted white background.

Of course, there’s also the new iPad interactive displays. For desktop products, they seemed superfluous. With the focus on the product, the iPad is easily ignored or overlooked. In fact, after observing visitors to the store for close to an hour, I didn’t notice anyone using the iPad retail interface for either the iMac or the MacBook product line.

I did see multiple people using the iPad Dell latitude e6400 battery Toshiba pa3534u-1brs battery  to review options and rate plans at the iPhone 4 table. The iPad’s representation of the confusing array of iPhone 4 options clearly benefited the consumer by distilling the information into easily understood tabs. Here’s a short video of the new terminals in action (both the iPhone and the Mac ones) so you can see for yourself what else they provide:

I do see a few flaws with this Retail 2.0 strategy that I suspect will be fixed soon. Apple stores have wonderful bright open storefronts and those iPads flush mounted against a table will get some glare. Some iPads were hard to read and it was a rather cloudy day. Also, because the iPad is not adjustable, you had to hunch over to use it; not the most comfortable position. Finally, though it seems obvious, you have to be familiar with the iOS interface in order to use the product. Although iOS is easy to learn and is quite intuitive, it’s not for everyone. I saw a gentleman with crutches who clearly was having some trouble with the iPad, though Apple Specialists immediately realized this and helped him.
Apple Retail 2.0 is a great use of iPads to present product information, but its implementation does have some flaws, and I don’t really expect it to scale to other retail environments given the relative high cost of outfitting each workstation with an accompanying iPad.

Apple can possibly use the Cloud iOS to blunt Google Android's

Apple can possibly blunt Google Android's momentum with a few strategies, including cheaper iPhones, cloud services for iOS, IP lawsuits and signing Sprint.
Google Android seized some 36 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in the first quarter, according to new numbers from research firm Gartner. That was enough to topple Nokia’s Symbian from its perch as the world’s leading smartphone system.

But Symbian’s a dead operating system walking, anyway, thanks to Nokia’s abandoning it in favor of Windows Phone. Meanwhile, Research In Motion saw its share dip to 13 percent, continuing the slide of the once-ubiquitous BlackBerry Compaq nc6000 battery Compaq nc6400 battery franchise; and Microsoft, with 3.6 percent of the market, is still fighting for an increased presence among consumers and businesses.

That leaves Apple’s iOS and Android as the heavyweight smartphone operating systems of the moment—and consumer and business ardor for smartphones show no signs of slacking, at least according to Gartner’s numbers.

“Smartphones accounted for 23.6 percent of overall sales in the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 85 percent year-on-year,” Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, wrote in the May 19 research note. “This share could have been higher, but manufacturers announced a number of high-profile devices during the first quarter of 2011 that would not ship until the second quarter of 2011.”

The current advantage lies with smartphones that offer a broad apps ecosystem. “Every time a user downloads a native app to their smartphone or puts their data into a platform’s cloud service, they are committing to a particular ecosystem and reducing the chances of switching to a new platform,” she added. “This is a clear advantage for the current stronger ecosystem partners Apple and Google.”

Certainly Apple finds itself locked in a hard battle with Google. In turn, that begs the question of what steps Cupertino could take with its upcoming releases to ensure its iOS devices don’t end up totally swamped by the Android Acer as07b41 battery hp dv6000 battery  Army. Here are five suggestions:

A Cheaper iPhone

Apple has a habit of offering the previous version of the iPhone at a cheaper price. That attracts consumers interested in, say, the $49 iPhone 3GS over the iPhone 4 at $199 and $299. However, the cheaper device also represents previous-generation technology.

Should Apple introduce a “mini iPhone,” invested with the latest technology, and offered at a price point lower than their premium or flagship iPhone, it could help drive consumer adoption in ways that, while perhaps not fully capable of overcoming Android’s sizable activations per day, would certainly make it more of an even game. Rumors of just such a cheaper, smaller iPhone have been circulating for months—but Apple being Apple, the company would likely need to convince itself that such a device meets both its high quality standards and need for high margins on every unit sold.

Cloud Services for iOS

According to Bloomberg, Apple has signed deals with Sony, EMI Group and Warner Music Group “to let users of its new music service access their song collections from handheld devices via the Internet.” Users could access their music via Apple’s servers instead of storing it on a hard drive. Universal Music Group is also apparently in talks.

At the same time, the blog Apple hp pavilion dv6 battery Hp probook 4510s battery Insider reports that Apple is exploring means of faster music streaming, by having its devices locally store a tiny portion of each song. That would songs to begin playing without a “buffering” pause, not to mention freeing up storage space.

More to the point, an iOS with robust cloud-media features is an iOS that could attract more consumers who plan on using their smartphone as a multimedia hub—especially if some of those features surpass what’s available on Android.

Sign Sprint

Why not? Although Sprint has put on a brave face in recent months about pushing their own line of Android-based devices, the chance to carry a bestselling device like the iPhone is a no-brainer business decision—especially if T-Mobile is absorbed into AT&T, which would leave Sprint the only U.S. carrier without Apple’s smartphone in its stable.

Keep Filing Those Lawsuits

In April, Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the U.S. District Court of Northern California. That suit alleged that the look, packaging and user interface of Samsung’s smartphones and tablets closely copies that of the Apple iPhone and iPad Lenovo 3000 v200 battery sony vgp-bps2a battery . Apple also has patent-infringement suits filed against Nokia, HTC, and Motorola.

Clearly, Apple isn’t a company shy about aiming as many lawyers as possible at its rivals. Intellectual-property lawsuits might not affect consumer adoption of Android, but they could create speed-bumps in the creation of still more Android devices to flood the market. At least, Apple likely hopes so.

Microsoft Is Your Friend

Apple and Microsoft might be rivals in many ways, but they have a common enemy: Google. The more Microsoft invests in its Windows Phone, and encourages developers to build apps for that platform over Android, the more Apple could benefit. Stronger rivals won’t necessarily blunt Android’s competitive momentum, but they could help slow it down. The enemy of one’s enemy is one’s friend, after all.

Review High-end smartphone - Nokia's first Windows Phone 7

Gartner’s estimates regarding the first quarter sales of Microsoft’s mobile operating system Windows Phone 7 may not paint the best picture imaginable, but it certainly doesn’t outline a story of doom and gloom, either. An estimated 1.6 million worldwide sales isn’t remarkable, but it isn’t dismal, and there’s definitely room for improvement in there. Which is exactly what Microsoft is continuously working on with their fledgling OS, hoping to not only tap into existing Windows Mobile/Windows Phone fans, but also grab a few (or way more than a few) new customers along the way as well. Microsoft’s biggest plan hasn’t been put into effect yet, but Nokia’s presence is a constant reminder that new, and possibly quite impressive devices are coming down the pipe.

In Gartner’s report, they mention Nokia Dell xps m1330 battery Compaq nc4400 battery by name, specifically calling the company out while they talk about Microsoft’s sales numbers being increased. Unfortunately, 1.6 million handsets on a worldwide stage isn’t all that impressive, so it’s not surprising to see Gartner suggesting that Nokia’s future presence in Microsoft’s corner would put an increase to these numbers. But, here locally, there’s a bigger question mark looming overhead.

Nokia’s presence here in the States is a constant one, but it is certainly not as bright as pretty much every other major manufacturer. HTC, Samsung, LG, Research In Motion, Apple, and HP are all household names at this point, while Nokia’s name pops up only every once in a while. Personally, I don’t even remember the last time I saw someone using a Nokia-branded phone. They’re out there, there’s no question about that, but hard to find.

And that’s what has me wondering just how Nokia will enter into the Windows Phone 7 game, especially here in the States. There’s no denying that if Nokia decided to do so, creating a mid-range WP7-based device for the worldwide market wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. We know that Nokia is going to have a little more wiggle room in the design of their branded handsets, despite Microsoft’s tight design grip on other manufacturers utilizing the Redmond-based Dell vostro 1710 battery Dell inspiron 1520 battery company’s mobile OS. So while making that mid-range device for other markets may be a good idea, I think Nokia has only one way to go here in the States, and that’s a killer smartphone.

I’ve already kicked around the idea that the hardware is going to start selling the software for Microsoft’s mobile OS, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Truthfully, even if someone were to buy a handset for primarily the hardware, I think after using Windows Phone 7 for a little while, they’d be just as excited to talk about the software as they are the hardware. And while HTC is primed to make that happen here soon, I think it is Nokia’s place to start selling that as well. We know that Nokia can make some impressive hardware, so if Nokia wants to make a real splash –especially here in the United States—then they have to make a smartphone that people want. And I mean really want.

Creating that perfect piece of hardware will be hard, as any manufacturer out there will tell you, but I think with the time that Nokia has before them, they have a chance at accomplishing it. And if Nokia wanted to be safe, they could very well launch several different devices at the same time, near the end of 2011, all of which accompany a certain spot in the mobile market. A smartphone to show off both the hardware and software, a mid-range device for those who want features without the price tag, and maybe something that could take up space between those two handsets.

What do you think Nokia should do first, when it comes to launching a Windows Phone 7-based device here in the States? Should they go high-end and aim to really impress the general consumer? Or should they go for the middle ground, and hope that a specific design can usher in a wide range of customers? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Apple market Report - Apple doubles iPhone sales

Apple sold 16.9 million iPhones during the first quarter of 2011 - effectively more than doubling sales year-on-year.

According to Gartner research VP Carolina Milanesi, the "market-beating growth" came from all regions, as the popular smartphone is now available in 90 countries from 186 CSPs.

"This strong performance helped Apple Hp 484170-001 Battery dell latitude d630 battery  consolidate its position as the fourth largest brand in the mobile communication market overall," Milanesi explained.

"Considering the higher than average price of the iPhone this is a remarkable result and highlights the impact a strong aspirational brand can have on a product."

Milanesi noted inventory levels at the end of the quarter were slightly higher than usual, as Apple not only continues to expand in markets such as China, (where distribution is more fragmented), but also extends its reach with new CSPs.

Meanwhile, Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, confirmed that Android (Google) and iOS (Apple) continued to dominate the smartphone OS wars.

However, Cozza said the big news in Q1 2011 was Nokia's strategic alliance with Microsoft on Windows Phone 7, along with Symbian's untimely retirement.

"[Clearly], this will precipitate a competitors' rush to capture Symbian's market share in the midtier."
The analyst Compaq nc6400 battery Dell vostro 1520 battery was also quick to emphasize the three primary critical success factors for mobile device manufacturers: ecosystem, applications and services.

"Every time a user downloads a native app to their smartphone or puts their data into a platform's cloud service, they are committing to a particular ecosystem and reducing the chances of switching to a new platform. This is a clear advantage for the current stronger ecosystem owners Apple and Google.

"As well as putting their devices in the context of a broader ecosystem, manufacturers must start to see their smartphones as part of a computing continuum," she added.

HTC Thanks Amazon - AT&T Removes Android Restrictions

After years of restrictions, AT&T will now allow Android smartphone customers to install applications downloaded outside the official Android Market.

The recently launched Samsung Infuse is the first of AT&T’s phones capable of installing apps from outside sources, including unofficial app stores or web links, a process called sideloading.

Eventually after some software updates, all AT&T Android smartphones will be capable of sideloading, according to AT&T.

“Over the next few weeks, we will also roll out this capability to existing devices in our base for which an upgrade is possible,” an AT&T spokesman said.

The HTC Inspire 4G, Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria and LG Thunder will receive the over-the-air upgrade. AT&T is also working on bringing this upgrade to the Motorola Atrix, although AT&T Hp 484170-001 Battery Symbol MC9060 battery  is waiting on a “future maintenance release” for the Atrix in order to upgrade the phone.

What AT&T isn’t saying, however, is that you most likely have Amazon to thank for this.

On March 22, Amazon released its Appstore for Android phones in the form of a standalone app. Those who wanted to access the 3,800 Android applications — including a new version of Angry Birds — from Amazon’s market were required to download the Amazon Appstore app from Amazon.com.

The problem was, AT&T’s phones wouldn’t let you do that. Users could only download apps available on the official Android Market, and because of Google’s policy of not allowing competing app stores to exist within the Android Market.

“Every day, Amazon releases a new app for free,” one upset customer wrote on AT&T’s own hosted message boards. “We continue to be left in the dark … Why can’t you just allow us to install 3rd party apps on our supposedly ‘open’ Android devices?”

On the same day as the Amazon Appstore announcement, however, AT&T changed its position. On March 22, AT&T told Wired.com, “We’re working to give our Android customers access to third-party application stores.” With the release of the Samsung Infuse this week, AT&T customers will finally have access to sideloaded apps.
Amazon confirmed to Wired.com that it had been in discussion with AT&T prior to the Amazon Appstore launch in March, and that Amazon is currently “working closely with AT&T to help make it as easy as possible for AT&T customers to have access to the Amazon Appstore for Android.”

On other non-AT&T Android phones where sideloading is allowed, users must check a box in the application settings menu for the phone “to allow installation of non-Market sources.” After checking the box, a small disclaimer pops up, letting you know it’s your fault if you download malware and screw up your phone. AT&T Symbol 21-65587-01 battery Motorola GP140 battery  confirmed that a similar process will be available to the five listed AT&T phones in the coming weeks, as well as future AT&T Android phone releases.

According to an AT&T, the company wasn’t allowing sideloading because of security issues. In an interview with AllThingsDigital, AT&T CTO John Donovan said that “although there was a vocal minority clamoring for such access,” the vast majority of AT&T users prefer a secure phone more than one that can access any and every app out there.

“I’m a gigantic new services risk-taker,” Donovan told AllThingsDigital. “I’m not at all a risk-taker as it relates to security and Toshiba pa3534u-1brs battery hp nc6400 battery privacy.”

A security researcher previously told Wired.com that allowing your phone to download apps from unofficial sources required some security compromises.

“As soon as you flip that switch and go away from the Android Market, which is the one place where most people go, then you are putting yourself at some risk,” security analyst Charlie Miller told Wired.com in a previous interview.

But with the release of Amazon’s Appstore, AT&T seems to be more of a “risk taker” than CTO Donovan let on. Maybe the clout of a multinational online retailer can make a company loosen up a bit, even if it supposedly means being less secure.

AT&T customers unable to access Amazon’s Appstore weren’t happy, and took to the forums to express frustration.

What Everybopdy Ought to Know About – Be nice to your new laptop (computer)

Be nice to your new laptop computer post by goodlaptopbattery.co.uk

Laptop (or notebook) computers are great. The small size and portability of laptop computers has turned them into the machine of choice for many people, me included. However, laptops have special needs that must be tended to if they are to remain trouble free. Here’s a list of things to do that can extend the life of your laptop computer.

1.) Do not block the cooling ports. Like all computers dell inspiron 1720 battery dell latitude d620 battery , laptops need a free flow of air in order to cool their internal components. In some cases, the best location for a laptop may be somewhere other than in your lap. Look at the bottom of the machine for slots or holes (known as “ports”) that are used by the internal cooling fans to circulate air.

Make sure that, when the laptop is turned on, these ports are never blocked. I use my laptop computer in my lap, but it is placed on a flat plastic tray, and the back of the machine is elevated on a long, thin strip of wood so that air can circulate freely underneath. An overheating laptop is a real bummer.

2.) Realize that your laptop is not indestructible. “Young” people seem to be especially ignorant of this fact. Unless you are using a Panasonic ToughBook or other “hardened” device built to military specifications, your laptop is likely made of cheap, flimsy plastic and extremely thin sheet metal. Don’t pick it up by the screen, or in any way that will flex the main case area. Do not slam the lid shut. Close the lid gently from the middle, instead of one corner.

Do not push down on the optical drive when inserting or removing CDs or DVDs. Do not pick it up and start walking away with the Dell vostro 1310 battery power supply or any other wire connected. Do not subject the laptop to abnormal vibration or jostling around. Do not stack books, boxes or other items on top of your laptop. Do not toss your laptop onto the couch from 3 feet away. Finally: this should go without saying, but do not dropyour laptop, or, worse, sit on it.

3.) Keep liquids and food away from your laptop. Liquid spills can easily kill a laptop. If you spill liquid in the keyboard area, leading to the interior of the laptop, immediately turn it upside down, unplug the power and take out the battery before the liquid starts shorting out internal components. Hopefully, if you react quickly enough, then the laptop can be disassembled, dried out, put back together and will still work.

If food crumbs and other crud fall into the keyboard, carefully support and turn the laptop upside down (while it’s turned off) and blow the keyboard out with gentle blasts of compressed air. Be careful, though; compressed air from a shop compressor or local truck stop can be powerful enough to blow the keys right off of the keyboard.

4.) If you travel with your laptop and it is subjected to widely-fluctuating temperatures, always allow it to come to normal room temperature before turning it on. This can avoid condensation forming inside and damaging internal components. Don’t leave your laptop dell xps m1330 battery Dell inspiron 1525 battery in your car during hot or cold weather.

5.) Do not use detergents, cleansers or other solvents to clean the screen, keyboard or other parts. All you need is a slightly water-moistened soft cloth, preferably cotton. Do not press too hard on the screen , especially if it is turned on. Gently wipe down, rather than scrub dirty parts and you’ll be in good shape.

6.) Take care of your laptop battery. When you first get your new laptop, and the battery becomes fully charged, run it down to zero and then recharge it; do this two or three times in a row. After that, use the laptop solely on battery power, running down the battery, at least once a week, rather than leaving it perpetually connected to the charger. These methods can make the battery last longer, and, I am told that they should also be used on newer, more modern lithium-ion batteries Dell latitude e6400 battery Compaq presario cq60 battery . Even so, be advised that laptop batteries usually only last about two or three years before giving out completely.

7.) Be careful moving your laptop while it is turned on. Your laptop’s hard drive has round disks called “platters” inside that spin at over 5000 revolutions per minute. One accidental bump or drop can cause the platters to make contact with other internal components, ruining the hard drive and destroying your files.

Take care of your laptop and you will both have a happy life together.

what is Microsoft really getting for its $8.5 billion purchase of Skype?

It's the kind of deal that really gets the tech world buzzing — one titan buying another for an astronomical amount — and the question on many people's minds now is what is Microsoft really getting for its $8.5 billion purchase of Skype?

From a technical perspective, it seems a little suspect. After all, Microsoft has already developed much of the same functionality that Skype provides. Windows Live Messenger offers free instant messaging and voice and video chat, it already works with Lync and Office, and Microsoft had previously announced plans to integrate Messenger into Windows Phone Hp pavilion dv6000 battery Sony vgp-bps13 battery .

From a financial perspective it doesn't look much better. Even though Skype is a massive (and disruptive) presence in Internet communications, it has never been very profitable. Last year Skype had $860 million in revenue, and a net loss of $7 million, according to its initial public offering filing. Forrester Research analyst Andrew Bartels told MSNBC:

It doesn't make sense at all as a financial investment. There's no way Microsoft is going to generate enough revenue and profit from Skype to compensate.

So why would Microsoft pay so much for a company that doesn't have vastly superior technology or great financials? As far as I can tell, there's five reasons:

1. Skype's user base

Skype has a strong and loyal base of more than 170 million active users across multiple platforms. Microsoft will get instant access to Skype's network Sony vgp-bps2c battery Sony vgp-bps8 battery , which represents a huge influx of customers and a big leap in Microsoft's presence as a consumer Internet company.

2. Skype and the enterprise

Of course, it's not all about consumers. Skype has been aggressively pursuing the enterprise market in recent years and has made some solid progress there. Microsoft likely sees this purchase as a win for both its consumer and business product lines, and we can expect to see Skype integration coming soon in all manner of Microsoft products and platforms. Already promised is Skype support for Xbox (and Xbox Live), Kinect, Office, Lync, Outlook, Hotmail, and Windows Phone.

More related business you maybe like:

 3. Windows Phone integration

Along those lines, perhaps the most obvious outcome will be Skype's integration into future versions of Windows Phone. This will allow Microsoft to compete squarely with Apple's Facetime and Google Voice. Expect to see Skype on a Nokia Windows Phone in the near future.

4. International long distance

Interestingly, one of Skype's biggest strengths was barely mentioned in the press conference announcing the deal: the massive amount of minutes Skype users represent on the public telephone network. Skype's been in an all-out war with the entrenched telecom carriers since its inception — the carriers despise Skype and rightly see it as a major threat to their business model. According to Alec Saunders, a telecom vet and ex-Microsoft employee, with this purchase Microsoft instantly becomes the world's largest carrier of international long distance minutes. How Microsoft will take advantage of this, and what impact it will have on their existing carrier relationships, is one of the open questions around this deal.

5. Blocking the competition

Let's not forget another angle that surely motivated Microsoft to pursue Skype — keeping it away from the competition. It's been common knowledge that Skype's investors have been looking for a buyer for some time. Skype was on a rocky road to an IPO, and it sounds like the investors who bought Skype from eBay were concerned about the viability of that process and eager to get their returns sooner rather than later. When Google came to the table, you can bet the deal-makers in Redmond started some serious number crunching.

Reports are surfacing that Microsoft Dell latitude d630 battery Dell studio 1555 battery may have paid much more than they needed to get Skype. Anonymous sources close to the negotiations have said that Google came in second place in the bidding at just $4 billion. That's a huge difference and it certainly suggests that Microsoft could have gotten Skype for much less. But some believe Google was never a serious suitor in the first place, and their interest may have been mostly about trying to keep Facebook from getting Skype.

As Microsoft is feeling pressure from the likes of Google and Apple, especially in the mobile space, the idea of a competitor getting their hands on Skype (and their network) was surely something Microsoft wanted to avoid. Microsoft is already seen as playing catch-up in the mobile space, and if Google got Skype that would put them even further behind.

Google's Notebook Chromebooks Will Appearance on Next Month

Can laptops that do little more than access the Web compete with traditional computers?
Next month, Google will attempt to reinvent the personal computer as little more than a browser and a screen and a keyboard. On June 15, the first lightweight Chromebook laptops, which run the company's Web-centric operating system, Chrome OS, will be available to buy from Samsung and Acer. Google hopes that every category of computer user—home users, businesses, and educational institutions—will buy in to a vision of computing that does away with locally installed software and instead accesses everything through a Web browser.
Google previewed Chrome OS Dell latitude d820 battery Hp 2230s battery late last year, and gave out notebooks designed to run the operating system in December 2010.

Samsung will sell a laptop with a 12.1-inch screen for $429 dollars, or $499 with built-in 3G wireless. Acer's more lightweight 11.6-inch Chromebook will also be available in two versions, the cheapest being $349. See Google's Web page about the Chromebooks.

Google's product manager for Chrome OS, Sundar Pichai, announced the plans at the final day of the company's annual I/O conference in San Francisco. Pichai suggested that the new Chromebooks will eliminate many of the headaches that users associate with personal computers Dell inspiron 640m battery Dell wr050 battery . "Just to spend your time on the Web today," Pichai said, "you have to deal with all of the legacy decisions made about operating systems in the last 30 years." That means dealing with slow startup times, nagging software  upgrades, and security problems, he said. "We wanted to distill [the PC] down to nothing but the Web."

The two new computers being introduced next month will power on almost instantly, said Pichai, and offer a much smoother experience. "Every time you boot up, you're up and running within eight seconds, and when you open the lid on a sleeping Chromebook, you're connected to the Web faster than you can move your fingers to the keyboard."

Throwing out large parts of the operating system also enables longer, cell-phone-like battery life that lasts all day, he said. Pichai even claimed that a Chromebook purchased next month will become more powerful over time. "Computers are normally great when you first install, but then performance degrades over time," he said. "But because a Chromebook upgrades itself automatically, in a few months your Chromebook will be even faster."

Chrome OS shares the code it uses to handle Web pages with Google's Chrome browser, which is automatically updated to make it perform faster. Pichai showed a version of the popular phone and tablet game Angry Birds, which ran smoothly through the browser following recent improvements to Chrome's handling of animations.
The predecessor to the two computers Dell inspiron 6000 battery Dell inspiron 1525 battery announced today, a prototype called the Cr-48, was sent to hundreds of thousands of people who volunteered to test the hardware as part of a pilot program.

Google's willingness to share an early version of Chrome OS revealed some of the drawbacks of Google's simplified approach to the PC.

Some of the issues identified through the pilot have been fixed for Chrome OS's commercial debut: the devices have a file manager and can handle storage devices like USB drives and digital cameras; they can play MP3 music files and video files downloaded from the Web; problems with the trackpad's performance have also been resolved.

Yet some limitations remain. Google has developed technology that allows websites and services to operate offline, but few providers have taken advantage of them. Even Google's Gmail, calendar, and document-editing Web apps won't work offline until later this summer. Printing using a Chromebook is possible, but is significantly more complicated than with a conventional computer.

Google will make the new Chromebooks available to businesses and educational institutions next month, via a subscription package that bundles leased computers with support. Business customers will pay $28 per user per month, while the education package will be just $20 per month. Chrome's security features—all data on a Chromebook is encrypted by default—and its simplicity compared to a conventional machine may be major selling points to organizations that must juggle hundreds or thousands of machines. At I/O, Pichai also previewed a desktop Chrome OS device—dubbed a Chromebox—made by Samsung that will be targeted at businesses and can drive multiple monitors.

Review - Facebook and Google War , Who Will Win ?

Ali-Frazier. Yankees-Red Sox. Celtics-Lakers. The sports world has often seen knock-down, drag-out battles between titans. But seldom do massive companies zero in on each other.

In the latest salvo of an increasingly nasty war, Facebook hired public relations firm, Burson-Marsteller to try to covertly get journalists and bloggers to write negative articles about Google's privacy practices relating to its new social media feature.

A spokesman for Facebook admitted the dastardly caper to The Daily Beast.

The feature in question is called, Social Circle, allows Facebook Hp 2230s battery Hp 530 battery user information to show up via a Google search.. While Facebook says Google is infringing on its users privacy, some say, Facebook railing on about the abuse of its users privacy is like the pot calling the kettle black.

"There is a battle for the future of the Web," Ray Valdes, an analyst at Gartner, told ComputerWorld, "and it is not about search engines, but about the social Web."

"The competition is between the new and the old -- between Facebook as the early leader in the social Web, and Google as the dominant player in the content Web. Everyone else, such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Twitter, will play a secondary role," adds Valdes, "and will start lining up on one side or the other."

Fox News Latino assembled a group of social media experts and influencers to gauge their thoughts on the brewing Facebook vs. Google brouhaha.

Lance Rios, Founder of Being Latino: As stated in the movie 'The Social Network', "the internet isn't written in pencil, it's written in ink". As so, we can never expect Hp dv6000 battery Hp nc8430 battery for anything to be fully private in any capacity,

ESPECIALLY when it comes to social networking sites. What Google is doing is wrong and intrusive and I see it to be a direct violation of our rights and believe that they will soon be reprimanded. While this specific incident will not be the last of companies trying to invade our personal lives, I do think that it will set off a red flag, leading many companies to be a little more conservative about how to approach people and their privacy.

Louis Pagan, Content Director for Hispanicize: This is not shocking to me. Google is making use of already public data...the big 'problem' with social media is just that - the media that you put out there is public. If that's a 'bug' in social media that needs to be fixed is another conversation. Unfortunately, the public is slow in learning this.
What I find disturbing about this story is the sneaky tactic that Facebook used to bring this to the public's attention. Back door deals, and back door conversations are suspicious in their very nature and should be taken with a grain of salt. It seems that Facebook wanted this story to go viral and wipe their hands clean from it.
It's like a cold war between the two companies, and the coveted prize is user data.

Julio Ricardo Varela, Founder of LatinoRebels.com: As a prophet of social media, Facebook made a huge error by turning this over to a PR company. It surprised me, since they are all about transparency, but in this case, they acted just like any other technology corporation.

The Google tactics don't bother me at all. My profile is protected on Facebook but I also allow some of my information to go out into cyberspace. From a marketing perspective, being linked to Google creates a greater opportunity for someone new to click on your profile. Makes sense to me.
In the end, this is moot, since Facebook will buy out Google in three years.
